In 1995 the Nature Conservancy Connecticut Chapter purchased 0.29 acres
of land on School House Road from the Masons Island Company for $100,000
using funds from a bequest of the Jess T. Adkins estate. Mr. Adkins
lived on Masons Island for many years and willed the funds to the
Conservancy for protecting coastal land in eastern Connecticut. A plaque of
recognition is affixed to a boulder near the end of School House Road.
The Conservancy also received a donation of $875,000 from the Masons
Island Company of a conservation easement on 47
acres of land including and surrounding the Great Marsh. The western 17
acres of the easement property is salt marsh and is bordered on the north
and west
by School House and Ram Point roads. The eastern portion is red maple and
oak tree upland forest with frontage on Chippechaug Trail. |
